There are a large number of students who attend the University at Albany, over twenty thousand, and making sure they are safe is no easy task. Maggie Canale, a student at SUNY Albany said, "There are people everywhere you go, and in this time of the year there are always people coughing and sneezing…It makes you a little paranoid especially since you see all this talk about swine flu." With the large population and increasing attention being paid to the H1N1 situation, students are taking precautions to keep themselves safe. A junior at SUNY, Rebecca makes sure that she always has a bottle of hand sanitizer with her at all times. "It's more of a security thing than anything else…It gives me piece of mind."
Students aren't the only ones who are taking precautions to make sure that they are safe; the University has put in place numerous outlets to help their students since The H1N1 virus has been identified in Albany County according to the Albany County Department of Health. Kevin Quig, a senior at SUNY recalls, "I can't remember a day where I haven't gotten an e-mail from the school in which they warn us about swine flu, and with all the hand sanitizer stations in the buildings I'd be surprised if anyone got the disease." According to the University, since the emergence of the H1N1 virus last spring, it has been closely monitoring the reports of human cases of H1N1. The University Health Center is working with federal, state and local public health agencies to provide the most up to date guidance and information available for their students.
