"It is a matter of learning from each other and forming a sense of trust. They client has to know in the back of their mind that we are pushing them because we know they can do more than they think they are capable of," says Burns.

Burns goes on to say that the clients he works with can't afford $50 every time they want to workout so throughout the training session they are learning different exercises and fundamentals that they can use when they work out on their own. It is very important to take what the client learns in the gym from the trainer to use when they are not in session. Everything from technique to how many reps they can do is all knowledge they can use when they're on their own.

Personal training is "a side job" for most of the trainers at the YMCA of Saratoga Springs. While there is good money in training (hour long sessions run from $30-$50 depending on the trainer) it doesn't pay the bills. Instead it is just extra money for the trainer while fulfilling a of achievement for the client.

Higgins says that training is something he enjoys doing because it is benefiting people that he sees every day in the gym and to see them excel at exercise is what makes his job special.

"I've seen people come in here overweight and unhappy and over the course of a year I've seen them turn their life around and that is what separates my job from everyone else's."

While personal training comes natural to some people, it is harder than it may sound. Personal trainers must be certified in different forms of training and complete many courses, including a test on training techniques and anatomy, in order to get their degree. The higher the certification the better the trainer. Simple as that.

Unfortunately life isn't as easy as it sounds for some trainers who often times have to turn away clients because of their unhealthy lifestyle.

When personal trainers acquire a new client there is a series of evaluations that must be first done before accepting them as someone they can train.
