It's that time again yes, it's an election year. That means advertisements, and chaos galore.
An obvious question on Alpha Phi (which is an international sorority at the University at Albany) is "how can we vote, if we are not from Albany?" Sammi Rotunno, who is the president of the sorority, thought this was a huge issue since about 98% of the girls were from downstate, or other places other than New York.
After some research it was discovered that when you register to vote, you receive a registration card, and that card tells you where you can go to vote in your area.
Yet, none of the girls in Alpha Phi were registered in the area. Absentee ballots are so easy to attain, So Sammi sent out an email explaining how each sister could vote by logging on to http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ELE/eleifv/howabs.htm and filling out an absentee application. When you fill it out they send you a ballot in the mail and that's that. Sammi also found out that each absentee ballot had to be in by the 6th calendar day before the election.
Alpha Phi then held a Voting dinner on 10/4/08. This is where 22 members of the sorority sat around and filled about absentee ballots while munching on some pasta and meatballs. Lindsay onifather, a member from long island said, "It makes me feel good to vote absentee or not because at least I know, my vote counted for something."Nikki Gelber another member of Alpha phi stated, "We are a social sorority and a giving one, and voting is something that should be mandatory."
All in all, it was a very exciting night for Alpha phi girls because of various reasons.
Mackenzie Sanator a member of Alpha Phi said, "This is the first time I get to vote in a presidential election and I'm not going to let me being at school stop me."
Alpha Phi is proud to be one of the 20 or so organizations out of around 100 that do try to make an effort to vote at Ualbany.
The presidential campaign happens 1 every 4 years, so come on guys be like Alpha Phi and VOTE!!!
