Reflecting on the Numbers
The experience of poll gatherers on the night of Nov. 4

The 2008 presidential election sparked many events including the gathering of polling information from various polling stations. This was the task of many individuals, including some SUNY Albany students.
The end of the election night was quite uneventful. Walking into the gym at the New Covenant Charter School was surprising. There were large machines and a few tired people sitting, still waiting for people to walk in to vote. This did not seem to be an environment in which a country changing election would take place. The poll takers were anxious to get out of the place where they were sitting since 6:00AM. The streets were vacant, parking was easy to find and getting into the building was very simple. There was only one open door to the New Covenant Charter School and that was the door to the polling stations. The gym was hot, almost stifling, even though the door was left open and the people there were not very pleased to be sitting in that gym.
At the strike of 9:00 PM the machines were promptly shut down and the numbers were recorded. After this process took place, everyone seemed to have disappeared. By 9:15PM the polling stations at the New Covenant Charter School on 50 North Lark Street were closed and about the same time the polling stations at the Brighter Choice Charter School for Boys on 116 North Lake Street were also completely shut down. There was no sign of any late voters, it seemed that the anxiety to vote was relieved earlier in the day leaving the people at the polls bored and feeling the effects of a long day.
