Election Night: South Pearl Street

Issue date: 11/10/08 Section: Election night
Despite my nerves of driving to an area in which I'd never been before, nerves quickly turned to excitement and a sense of relief when I walked into my assigned polling area. The excitement came from my deep sense of obligation as a citizen to vote and it looked as if there were many who believed the same. The relief came after I realized by looking at the numbers that nearly all voters were rooting for Barack Obama. Perhaps this idea of change isn't too far out of reach.
Upon entering 625 South Pearl Street at 8:00p.m. on Tuesday I walked into a room that seemed to be anxious and tired. The workers were ready for a change and ready to go home. One man working the polls that day said to me, "Obama is only a representative for us, the people. It is us that need to take the initiative for change. He can only do so much without our ideas and own actions." I couldn't have agreed more with us. Too often we believe that the President is the hero when things go the right way for us and quickly becomes the scapegoat for us when things go wrong.
All three voting boths had similar results. Obama's votes were in the hundreds and more often than not McCain had no votes. The biggest district did have some McCain votes but they were scarce.
This was a good experience for a number of reasons. It was great to see so many people enthusiastic to participate in this election and it was also great to see the passion of the workers there. They were tired but happy to be there.
