There was an astonding rate of first time voters ready to exercise there rights on Tuesday November the 4. The Albany Times Union reports that young voters came out in record numbers "more than twice the amount for the 2004 election."

At the rental office in The Capital Woods Apartment complex, two voter register booths were set up for those in that district to vote. Today's voter were in for a real treat. Along with signing up to vote. the polling center was set up with coffee and doughnuts for the morning voters. small appetizers of crackers and cookies for the afternoon voter, and pizza, soda, salad and bundt cake for dessert for the evening voters. While many turned out by the time the polls closed there was still enough left over for those who wanted more.

Two girls stand out in my mind. Melissa Robinson* and Carla Elliot*. Neither one looked older than fifteen. Today was their first time in there lives they were able to vote. Both ladies just turned 18 a few weeks before the presidential election. Both had a certain gleem in their eyes that made tonights event more than just voting for the president of the United States. "Are we too late," one asked. "No, said the other the polls don't close untill 9, we got 6 minutes."

Melissa went first, her confidence guided her to speak on behalf of her friend Carla. "We have our I.D.'s and my grandmother said we could vote here." . Their I.D.'s were taken from a women behind the table who looked as if she'd rather be anywhere but there.

After signing the voter registration book, and given brief instructions both girls were pointed in the direction of the voter booth. They began to whisper and giggle and than it was decided that Carla go first. She stepped into the booth , pulled the curtain, a few short moments later she stepped out, smiling. Melissa was up next, the curtain closed behind, she tapped her foot anxiously as she made her selections. When she walked out the booth she turned to her friend and asked" who'd you pick, I picked Obama." "Me too, said Carla.
