"That's it, it's 9:15, said Essie Carlson* close em up and lets count em down."
Essie is a life long Albany resident, felt it was her personal duty to command the polls for her district in Albany's Arbor Hill area. She remember when blacks were forced to sit in the back of the bus, she remembers visiting relatives in Mississippi, where segregation was prevalient.
So a day like this, voting for a black man, to be placed in the highest political office is a day she had to be a part of. A day she thought she'd never see.
Questions
How long have you been here?
We all been here since 5:30 this morning, and it has been a long day. The busiest had to be between 5 and 7pm. People was just getting off work they were tired and so were we. Some didnt have the right voting district so they had to be informed on what they needed to do. That didn't sit too well with some people. Other weren't aware of the entire voting process of which you neeeded proper I.D. and how you must contact voter registration. They have been some whom aren't even registered. Some folks just had bad attitudes. I didn't make the rules, but I do need to obide by them, and many can't understand that
Was there a large amount of first time voter?
Yes, and many weren't all that young, I had one man who never voted before because he felt his vote didnt matter. I told him as long as you have breath you need to exercise your right. If
you couldnt vote you'd be upset.
Why was this such an important day for you?
It is history in the making, never before has an event like this happened, it gives hope to many that felt there was none. It make me proud.
What happens if he wins?
If he wins it will be a great day. A great time. He [Obama] represents the hopes and dream of many whom thought that there was no light at the end of the tunnel. I pray for his safety, the country under his administration, and that he raises the country off it knees to stand tall.
Would you do this again?
[Laughing] After a day like today I would most likely not. But than again you never know.
