Breaking into any media-related field is never easy. However, students can make the transition from college into the work force much easier by obtaining an internship while still in college.

Prof. Rainbolt stresses the importance of an internship to students in the SUNY Albany journalism program. "If you apply for a job without having had at least one internship, you'll have a tough time getting a second look. Employer's expect to see at least one intnerhsip on an applicant's resume."

James Allen says that an internship was "crucial" to his being able to break into the field. His first internship, at Senator Hilary Clinton's office, led to another internship at Sawchuck-Brown, a public relations firm in Albany.

"At Sawchuk-Brown I was hired as an assistant account executive, a position I currently have," said Allen.

"Internships are the golden key to the P.R. world," says Ronald Kermani, Senior Vice President for Communications for the New York State Education Services Corp. and adjunct public relations professor at UAlbany. "Many students are hired at P.R. agencies after they complete their internships."
