Spotlight on Suffolk University Martial Arts Club

The Suffolk Voice, Suffolk University, MA

When sophomore Alisa Cherkasova took a tour of Suffolk University, one of the first questions she asked was "Is there a martial arts club?" When she learned that there was not a group for martial artists on campus, she became motivated to create one. Earlier this semester, Cherkasova, alongside Cassidy Goodwin and Padmini Seepersad developed Suffolk University Martial Arts.

Today's column was meant to be, as some may have been told, about how sex has become a Weberian bureaucracy with certain norms and standards that govern the rules of sex and the image and utility we derive thereof. It would have been needlessly complicated and ended, in all likelihood, as a discussion about race, gender roles and a giant "f*ck y'all" ending.

Okay, sports fans and sex fiends, this is the last column of the semester. That means I have to make sure to go out with a bang, which is the only fitting way for a sex columnist to make an exit. Being the good Brown student that I am, I'm enthralled by the concept of The Boundary.

Sorry to inform you, Harry Potter, but wizards are out. They have been replaced by a much scarier folkloric creature: vampires. For years, vampires have entered the pop culture conscience as the villains. They only come out at night, emerging in the darkness from the coffins they've slept in all day.

There is no denying it: the Canadian hard rockers of Nickelback have dominated the radio and mainstream rock scene for upward of eight years, and in that time they have done more than simply attain fame and wealth beyond imagination. They have also led a certain feel-good, high-fiving, booty-slapping dynasty in rock music that many have endearingly dubbed "Cock Rock.

Our reputation as the "Caring College" is a bit unstable. At times, the label rings unmistakably true and at others it has been mumbled with sarcasm and bitterness. Now, though, it seems like the nickname is making a comeback.

In a letter to the student body, President Helm, the administration, and student leaders signed the list of embarrassments attributed to the College this year.

Adam Cambier '09: Baptize this

The Mormon Church has been in a bit of trouble lately. First, they got a bad rap for siccing Mitt Romney on our poor, unsuspecting country. More recently, legions of supporters of gay marriage have been protesting outside Latter Day Saints churches across the nation after Mormon support for California's Proposition 8 played a significant role in its passage.

Politics often make little sense to me.

Case in point: the 2008 election, though a monumental win for one of the most progressive presidents in the history of the country, also ushered in one of the most reactionary propositions ever suggested.

Of course, I'm talking about Proposition Eight, which amended the California state constitution to restrict the definition of marriage to a union between a man and a woman only.

From our earliest discussions of making this issue, we knew the most effective approach would be twofold - the week's content would focus on pressing environmental issues, of course, but we would also endeavor to change certain aspects of our normal production in an effort to fully understand the implications of green publishing.

When the word "vegan" comes to mind, many picture tofu-chomping hippies who only shop at Whole Foods and throw red paint at those who have indulged in a Burberry fur. While many of these people don't even know what vegan means, others don't realize that being a vegan consists of a lot more than just changing eating habits.
