"I Will Follow Him": Obama As My Personal Jesus 113

The Sophian, Smith College, North Hampton, MA

6 hours ago by Maggie Mertens

Obama is my homeboy. And I'm not saying that because he's black - I'm saying that in reference to those Urban Outfitters t-shirts from a couple years ago that said, "Jesus is my homeboy." Yes, I just said it. Obama is my Jesus.

While you may be overtly religious and find this to be idol-worshipping, or may be overtly politically correct and just know that everything in that sentence could be found offensive, I'm afraid it's true anyway.

Predicting question 2 to go up in smoke 15

The Daily Collegian, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Amherst, MA

On this campus, the legal status of marijuana is apparently a hot-button issue. I have been solicited by hippies when I enter the Worcester Dining Commons virtually every night for the past two weeks seeking to persuade me that Question 2 - a ballot question which decriminalizes the possession and usage of small amounts of marijuana - should have my "yes" vote.

Butterfield's Legacy 10

The Daily Collegian, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Amherst, MA

6 hours ago by Matthew M. Robare, Collegian Staff

Our fair campus is home to many fine dorms, but there is one in particular around which legends swirl like the autumn leaves, viewed as a kind of paradise lost for college students - Butterfield.

Many stories are told about that dorm. Stories of how it had it's own meal plan and dining hall that was a front for drug selling, how it was discovered when it made more money than all other student businesses combined, how all who lived there were so different from the rest of the school and how the dorm seceded from UMass once.

Presidents and marijuana 9

The Daily Collegian, University of Massachusetts, Amherst, Amherst, MA

8 hours ago by Nick O'Malley, Collegian Columnist

In this year's election, the national media is ablaze with the prospects of a black president or female vice president. This election will make history. On college campuses, however, a majority of interest is vested in the infamous question two.

When it comes down to it, the history-making aspects of the 2008 election include only two things - the end of George W.

If you head to theaters to see "Taking Woodstock" next summer, you might recognize some of the muddy hippies in the background. Over a dozen MCLA students recently took part in the production of Oscar-winning director Ang Lee's new film.

"I never realized how many people it takes to make a movie and how many times you have to re-take the scenes," said senior Marcelle Bastille, who wore blue capri's and blue Converse All-Stars while on the set.

Students aren't as evil as you might think

Keene Equinox, Keene State College, NH

5 days ago by Matthew Gainty

It's taken three years to realize just how completely the residents of Keene dislike college students.

To be completely honest, I can't say that I blame them.

We are always asked to try and imagine ourselves in the proverbial shoes of others in order to better understand our actions and the impact they have.

If I were to be anywhere at 7:30 a.m. on a Monday morning, I'd most likely be in bed, smacking my alarm clock into silence before falling onto the floor at 8:45 for my 9 a.m. class. But as fate - and a hastily assembled casting call at UMass - would have it, last Monday found two Smith friends and me on the movie set of Ang Lee's upcoming film "Taking Woodstock" in New Lebanon, New York, taking in the setup of vintage cars and yoga circles while waiting for the "background, action!" cue.

Condemned buildings plague North Adams

The MCLA Beacon, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, MA

5 days ago by C. Brian Moorhead- Freelance

For many MCLA students, it quickly becomes clear that the city in which their college stands is a city with its heyday behind it. Nothing makes this fact more obvious than the many old buildings that stand in North Adams with hazard signs nailed out front, marking them condemned and structurally unfit for human occupancy.
